Approach

The research agenda will be developed through three topical workshops. Each of these workshops will consist of approximately 30 invited attendees. Each workshop is a 3 day working event. Each workshop is expected to produce a report that outlines:

  • The grand challenges in the area
  • The key problems that must be addressed in order to succeed.
  • Institutional barriers to success such as funding, community building, evaluation criteria, communications

After all three workshops there will be a synthesis meeting to identify key R&D directions and to interact with funding agencies in program development.

The workshop reports and the synthesis report will be available for community comment

Participation

There will be an open solicitation for attendance at the workshops. Each prospective attendee will be asked to submit a personal statement on their views (2 pages max). These will be evaluated by the organizers to select the attendees. A small number of seats at each workshop are reserved for PhD students who are late in their programs and getting ready to launch their careers.

Although it will be helpful to our budget if attendees can pay some of their costs, we have funding for the travel and lodging of most attendees.
